Saturday, December 5th, 2009Oakthorpe Reservoir in Ohio, The Place No One Cares About!
Sunday, April 19th, 2009I was fishing Oakthorpe Reservoir yesterday and the one thing I noticed most was all the trash around the lake. There was paper and junk everywhere!
Most of the lake shore is connected to private property, so can you imagine how the property owners feels looking down towards the lake and seeing all the trash? How long does it take to pick up a piece of paper to keep the area looking nice?
Everywhere you fish nowadays people just don’t give a damn, they leave their junk right where they used it. For example, yesterday, three kids apparently camped out overnight at Oakthorpe, when they left the fire was still burning and they just left it. First off, there is supposed to be no fires at Oakthorpe, second how long would it have taken to just get some water and put it out? I mean they are right by the lake!
Then you have the ATV’s! According to the game warden, no atv’s are even allowed there but they come in, make ruts everywhere and make it rough on people who try to fish from shore. I have seen them go right up on private property and ruin the land with the ruts they make.
Then you have the idiots that runs their outboards wide open on the lake. First off, read the damn website from the ODNR, it is a trolling motor only lake. I have told people that and what do they do? Start their outboards and go across the lake.
The problem with Oakthorpe is no one cares! Kids come there and do their drugs, it is known to them as “Reefer Lake”, I have seen drug deals go on there too. I also seen people in their big 4 wheel mud trucks get back to check on their crops where no one else can go.
Then the weeds get so high every year that you can’t even fish from shore because when you go back to cast, the rod hits the high weeds on the shore by the ramp. I think they might get cut once a year, if that!
Then you have all the drinkers that go there to drink their beer and etc. Everytime you go there you see a couple of people sitting in their vehicle drinking.
The main problem is no one cares about this little lake! I haven’t seen the game warden there in years! ODNR sets a bad example by leaving the place go to hell, people think if they don’t care about the lake, why should they? ODNR could post signs about being a trolling motor only lake and no ATV’s but they haven’t and won’t until the ATV’s sets the place on fire in the summer and burns the caretakers house down or some other house around the lake.
We need this little lake policed by the Fairfield County Game Warden, Buckeye Lake Lake Patrol Offiice and Fairfield County, Ohio Sheriff Office, if just for a little while to let people know someone actually cares.

Joe and I went to Oakthorpe-he did OK!
Monday, March 23rd, 2009The temperature was a little over 60 and the skies were blue with a moderate wind. We fished the North shore by the ramp and caught nothing so we started working our way around the East side of the lake. I was using a Salt and Pepper Charlies Twitchin Shad and Joe was fishing a Rattle trap. Joe caught one bass on the rattle trap. Then he said “you know you almost have the right lure but not quite”, like he always says and he put on a white Trick Worm, he caught 3 more bass on the Trick Worm. I caught one fish on my Twitchin Shad. We were fishing them weightless.
None of the fish were very big. The water temperature was between 56 and 58 degrees in most places and low. We talked to several other people and most of them had caught nothing. One person did say he caught some small crappie. So, between us, we caught 5 bass….Joe 4 and me 1. This is about how it starts out every year…he is up 2-0. When the pads come up then I take over and give him lessons
Actually, last year I was ahead our first times out but I’m not worried , we have come out even the last 2 years before this one and if we don’t I can always count wrong.
A Lure So Good I ordered 250 of them!
Thursday, March 12th, 2009Many of you know that when I was in Florida I used a lure called Charlie’s Twitchin Shad…particularly the Salt & Pepper! Since I came back to Ohio I haven’t seen anywhere that has them so I have been without any for years now.
Well, I found Charlies number and talked to Nancy there and ordered 250 Twitchin Shads. That should last me a while. The service was great and Nancy is an extremely nice person. she has a lot of running around to do and is out of the office quite a bit so just leave her a message.
If you live in the South and can get the Twitchin Shad from a local dealer…then she will have you do it that way, I believe. If you live in the North and can’t get them then maybe she can help you.

The way I use these lures is I throw them out and just use my rod tip to barely move them a little at a time right under the water’s surface! I reel in the slack line as I move them with my rod tip kind of high, when I get a strike I lower my rod tip a little and take up any slack and set the hook!
Strike King Rage Tail Shad-Rigging it the Right Way
Friday, February 20th, 2009I fished a lot last year with the Strike King Rage Tail Frog and Shad and did pretty well but it seemed like I was missing a lot of fish with the Rage Tail Shad.
I recently found out there was a reason for all the misses on the Shad, I wasn’t rigging it right. I was rigging the shad through the nose, then through the bottom of the bait then skin hooking the top. It looked good and made a lot of water move and splash but it wasn’t right.
The correct way to rig the Strike King Rage Tail Shad is sideways and then skin hook the shad on the other side. It still makes all the commotion going through the water but when you get a strike the hook doesn’t have to go through near as much plastic and you get a better hook set. Not only that but the bass have more of a target when you rig it sideways.
Just remember to pull away the tail from the body, all I have used had a little piece of plastic holding the tail to the body, you want the tail to be free.
I have fished this lure in grass, lily pads, around timber and have had good luck everywhere I fished it. It is a great topwater bait! Just make sure you have heavy enough line, personally I use Fireline Braid when fishing this lure.
