Trolling Motor Running Slower Than Usual? No High Gear?

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

I went fishing at Clouse Lake about a month ago with Joe and was caught in weeds most of the time. Afterwards, I had no 5th gear on my trolling motor and it seemed to run slowed than usual overall. I figured I burned the gear out of my trolling motor getting out of thick weeds all day.

First of all, you have to realize I’m not the brightest bulb in the pack, I am sure many of you would have thought about this right away….

I was talking to my fishing partner Joe and told him I thought I burned out my 5th gear on my trolling motor and that is was running slower overall, he said anytime that he has had problems with his trolling motor it was caused by fishing line wrapped around the shaft the propeller was on.

Well, this morning I took off the propeller and sure enough I had enough fishing line on the shaft that I could have probably filled about a third of my fishing reel. It’s a wonder the poor old trolling motor ran at all. It seems to work fine now.

TV Fishing Shows….Sponsors vs Learning

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

I have to laugh when I see some TV shows about fishing for bass. For example, Fishing University…about the only thing you are going to learn from this show is who sponsors them and all the lures they make that they want you to purchase.

On the other hand, The Bass Pros is worth watching and you can learn a lot about bass fishing from people like Horton, Van Dam, Stacy and others. Put what you learn to good use.

I also like Bill Dance and his show is pretty knowledgeable. You can learn a lot from old Bill and you can see how he likes to make the fish splash and take longer than usual to land it. I think he likes the drama of that big ole bass splashing on top of the water.

Fishing with Roland Martin is a waste to me, first off, he has an ego the size of Texas. I seen people at his Marina in Florida say “hi’ to him and he wouldn’t even say “hi’. I thought what a jerk! He forgot where he came from apparently and who made him who he is. That was the last time I went to his Marina.

If you want to meet some nice guys then Horton, Van Dam, Dance and Houston all have time for their fans but please don’t bother them when they are fishing a tournament. They will treat you just like they are everyday people. Martin, on he other hand, you have to get a ladder just to be on his level apparently.

Are You Doing Your Part In Preserving The Bass Population?

Sunday, March 14th, 2010

I read an article back in the early sixties that 1 out of every 100,000 bass eggs make it to an adult. This really concerned me and before B.A.S.S. or most any other fishing organization was formed, I began to preach to others about catch and release.

Now you have to realize back then almost every one ate the fish they caught. One such person was a good friend of mine named Joe. Joe loved to fish for bass and was quite a sportsman but what he caught he kept. Well, I talked to him about catch and release but he wanted to still keep the fish. I tried everything I knew to keep him from keeping all the fish he caught.

One day he put a nice bass on his stringer and I began about how I couldn’t believe how he was going to keep that fish. How only 1 in 100,000 made it to an adult and how that was a female bass and it would produce more bass if returned. I kept on him for about an hour.

I would do this every time we went fishing. One day he agreed with me and returned the bass he caught and very rarely did he keep a bass after that at least that I know about.

Here is the deal. I have seen people keep every bass they catch, I have seen guides who tell their customers to get their fish mounted and even include it in the price they charge when they catch a nice bass. I have seen others especially older people keep all their fish. Somewhere along the line it is going to effect the number and quality of bass both. You have to realize older people lived in the depression years to and were brought up to eat fish, it was a way to survive when others had nothing, so I have no qualms about that but now they don’t need to keep everything they catch.

Now, I don’t mind people keeping a bass every once in a while if they like to eat bass but just remember the big bass are females. They will be the ones who produces more bass for all of us to enjoy in later years.

Watching The Classic

Monday, March 1st, 2010

A few good friends got together on Feb. 21, 2010 to watch the Bassmaster Classic. My fishing partner Bill invited us down to his house for food and to see the 2nd day of the Classic.

Jim Rempel and Beth was there, Bill and his wife Kathy, Gary (a guy who fishes with Bill, and myself. Of course, we talked about bass fishing a lot.

Bill had made some barbecued rabbit that I just new I wouldn’t like, hell, I love it….it was absolutely delicious, he also made some chili that was really good. Beth made macaroni salad that was the best I ever ate.

Bills dogs were watching with us, I determined they are all lap dogs within the first 5 minutes I was there. Not spoiled either lol

I had a really great time visiting with my friends and teasing Bill and getting teased about our fishing. There was a mention or two about someone fishing in the trees for squirrels but I’m not mentioning any names about who they were talking about or when.

We all had an excellent time.

Thanks Bill and Kathy for inviting us.

A little under the weather

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

As most of my readers have noticed and some have wrote about the http://www.bassfishingohio.com/bassblog/ hasn’t been quite up to par lately and I feel I owe my readers an explanation.

I haven’t been feeling my best lately and been extremely tired and found out a few weeks ago that I am in stage 4 renal (kidney) failure. What’s really making me tired I think is my blood pressure has been running like 230/119 most of the time and they can’t seem to get it down.

Not only that I decided to quit blogging and closed the blog for awhile then decided I missed it and reinstalled my backup files but they only went to August 2009 so some posts aren’t here that were here before. Of course, in reality, I haven’t made many posts since August, so you haven’t missed a lot.

I have decided to not do the kidney dialysis thing or get a transplant either one, this for personal reasons and past experiences I had with a lady I was with for 10 years.

As far as this blog goes, I am going to try and keep it going for my bass fishing friends and hope you enjoy it. Thanks for being here and reading my blog about bass fishing in Ohio.

A Great Forum and Great Bunch of Guys!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Have you ever went to a forum and all you have there are people who think they know everything about fishing? If you ask a question, they make you feel like an idiot for asking?

Are you looking for a forum that makes you feel at home, always eager to help answer your questions without being a know-it-all? If so, then I have a place for you called http://fishtalkfishingreports.yuku.com/forums/59

I have met several of the people on this forum and they are just as nice in person as they are on the forum. Rick was one of the nicest guys I ever met anywhere, then there’s Jim from Lake Logan and Bill from New Straitsville, Larry from Lancaster, Ohio and many more. These guys not only love to fish but will help you learn what you want to know and do it in a nice way, not a know-it-all way.

I have fished for bass for over 50 years and have joined a lot of forums in that time but I have to say this is the nicest one I have ever joined. They have lake reports from every state and people country wide to answer your questions and to try to help you become a better angler.

A Very Special Young Man, Timothy Larson!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I watched a Jimmy Houston TV show this morning about a very special young man named Timothy Larson. You see, Timothy had a terminal illness and knew what the end results was going to be but he was a brave young man and didn’t let it keep him down.

Tim was just 4 years old. He could have had any adventure he wanted as his last wish, Disneyland, or whatever, but what he wanted most was to go fishing with Jimmy Houston, and Jimmy made that wish come true. Matter of fact, Jimmy and Tim became very good friends.

This little boy was a brave young man and an inspiration for us all. He had a smile that lit up the whole world. He was a great little fisherman too. The very last TV show he wanted to watch was Jimmy Houston and the last thing he wanted to do was go fishing. If you could watch this show and not have a tear in your eye then you did better than me. What a fine example for us all! Timothy passed away in 2008.

There are many young men and young ladies who have a terminal illness like Tim did and many who have have a wish like Timothy did of going fishing. Some have no means of going, whether it be no family members to take them fishing, no way of getting to a lake or whatever.

Maybe, it’s time we take a minute from our busy world and see if we can make another young person’s dream come true. There are many young people in The Special Wish Foundation, St. Judes and local hospitals in your area in the same situation as Timothy was. They also would love to go fishing. Not only could you make their dream come true but you could make a very special friend. Take a few minutes out of your life and give that time to someone special. You can post messages on bulletin boards, let hospital staff know your intent and even put an ad in the local paper. It’s something you and your new friend will remember forever.
