Congratulations Skeet Reese-Bassmasters Classic Champion of 2009!

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Congratulations to Skeet Reese for winning the Bassmaster’s Classic!  Skeet is from Auburn, CA and was born June 30th, 1969.  His wife is named Kim and he has two children Leamarie and Courtney.

Skeet was behind leader Jami Fralick by 8 ounces entering the final day but caught a 5 bass limit that went 16 pounds 12 ounces for a total weigh -in of  54 pounds, 13 ounces.

Mike Iaconelli caught 20 pounds, 3 ounces the last day of the tournament and came in second place.

Brian Snowden finished third at 52 pounds 14 ounces.

Mike McClelland was fourth with a total of 52 pounds 1 ounce.

Did anyone see how how Iaconella acted while fishing? There is actually something wrong with that man, that isn’t enthusiasm that is insanity.  Doesn’t he remind you of some 4 year old kid having a temper tantrum?  Grow-up Iaconelli!  We’re all tired of seeing you act like an idiot!

Well, it finally happened, we have a woman fishing the Bass Master Classic on the Red River.  There seems to be a lot of controversy about her fishing the tournament and a lot of the men qualifiers don’t think she should be there.

Kim is a 28-year-old Australian native who now lives in Pelham, Alabama.  She was 2008 angler of the year from the five-tournament Women’s Bassmaster Tour.  Her first largemouth bass was an 8-pounder that she caught in the California delta.  She was a rookie on the WBT last year, she won the first tournament, finished no lower than sixth in the next three and won the season ending WBT Championship to secure the angler-of-the-year title.

Many of the anglers really don’t feel she should be in the classic as she didn’t compete with them like the rest of the competitors did.  They think she was just given the opportunity.

Here is what a couple of fellow anglers said about this:
Peter Thliveros, of Jacksonville,. “My biggest gripe about it is she was given an opportunity that none of us were ever given. None of us had the opportunity to fish [the WBT]. It’s a girls’ club only.”

Bernie Schultz of Gainesville, Fla. “But the simple fact remains that she did not qualify like the rest of the competitors. She didn’t compete against the guys who earned the right to be here. She competed with a completely different league of anglers.”

So, what is your thought on this?  Do you think she should be fishing in the Bass Master Classic?  Post or comment here or seem what other anglers are saying at: http://fishtalkfishingreports.yuku.com/topic/3369

Strike King Rage Tail Shad-Rigging it the Right Way

Friday, February 20th, 2009

I fished a lot last year with the Strike King Rage Tail Frog and Shad and did pretty well but it seemed like I was missing a lot of fish with the Rage Tail Shad.

I recently found out there was a reason for all the misses on the Shad, I wasn’t rigging it right.  I was rigging the shad through the nose, then through the bottom of the bait then skin hooking the top.  It looked good and made a lot of water move and splash but it wasn’t right.

The correct way to rig the Strike King Rage Tail Shad is sideways and then skin hook the shad on the other side.  It still makes all the commotion going through the water but when you get a strike the hook doesn’t have to go through near as much plastic and you get a better hook set.  Not only that but the bass have more of a target when you rig it sideways.

Just remember to pull away the tail from the body, all I have used had a little piece of plastic holding the tail to the body, you want the tail to be free.

I have fished this lure in grass, lily pads, around timber and have had good luck everywhere I fished it.  It is a great topwater bait! Just make sure you have heavy enough line, personally I use Fireline Braid when fishing this lure.

First Time Out In 2009

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

I decided to try and go out today for the first time in 2009.  The temperature was only 30 degrees here in Ohio, the wind was light but cold and the lake in some parts still had ice around it and muddy and high.

Instead of going for a finesse bait like I usually do this time of year, I thought I would try an eight inch Zoom Blackberry Lizard and give the bass something worth going after, little as they may.

I had already oiled and greased my reels, wiped down the rods and put on new Fireline, so I was ready to go.  I got at the lake and it was cold to say the least, matter of fact, it started snowing.  I left my gloves in the truck and forgot my hat so that made it even worse.

I threw a few times on the North end of the lake because that is where the water warms the fastest usually but didn’t have any luck, not even one strike.  I do want to say one thing, it sure was nice to get out of the house and to feel the lure in the water.

I’m ready for spring and can’t wait to go again, when a little warmer!

While We’re On Tv Shows….Here’s one that is a waste of time!

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

When I watch fishing shows I expect to learn something from these big time pros as I expect you do also.  In my previous post I talked about how I liked Bill Dance and his TV show because you can learn a lot from the man about fishing techniques and etc.  He has forgot more then most of us will ever know.

Well,  on the other hand there’s a fishing show called “Fishing University”, I think that is the name of it.  To me, this show is just a waste of time and TV space.  I haven’t learned one damn thing on this show except who the sponsors are and what they sell.  They not only have the sponsors products in their commercials but also they talk to them on board the boat while fishing about their products.  I mean constantly they are talking about their sponsors and their products and that leaves no time to teach us anything about fishing techniques.

If I just wanted to hear a bunch of commercials  I could watch any TV show or just make up my own commercials and record them and sit and listen to it.  This show needs to make the topic of the show fishing tips not sponsors.

The only degree you will get from this university is in advertising.

My Favorite Fishing TV Show Host

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

When you think of TV Fishing Show Hosts you think of people like Grisby, Martin, Dance and many others but my personal favorite is Bill Dance.

Bill is going towards that big 70 birthday in about a year or so and still works daylight to dark.  He was brought up in Memphis, Tennessee and is a big football fan…hence…the Big T hat he wears.

Bill also personally knew Elvis and is a big fan of his, but the big thing that makes me a fan of Bill Dance besides his fishing knowledge is his friendliness and that he has never forgot where he comes from..unlike some other TV host…um…Roland!

I even like the way he holds his rod high and makes the fish splash like he does..it adds extra excitement.  Bill has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about bass fishing.  The best part for us is he is willing to share his knowledge and teach us how to catch more and bigger bass.

I have seen other TV fishing shows that are just a waste of time for any of us.  Yes, they are good to watch a fish caught but as far as teaching us anything, they might as well not even be on the air.  I’m not mentioning any names in particular but some of them have the words…greatest and reel in them.  The hosts of these shows are lucky to even be on the air as they know almost nothing about fishing except to throw out and reel back in.  As far as the concept of why they are catching fish they have no clue, let alone being able to explain it to us.

I never will forget being at the Roland Martin Marina and several people saying “hi” to Roland and he didn’t answer any of them.  Ole Roland has got to big to even speak to the people who got him to where he is now.  If that would have been Bill, he would have probably not only spoke to them but went over and shook their hand.  Like I say, Bill remembers who he is and where he came from and always will.

Bill and his wife has been married “forever” as Bill says and have a couple of boys and a daughter.  Bill also has a great sense of humor.  As most know, he does get into some messes some times with insects and he surely isn’t a fan of snakes and he does have some super blunders and even shares them with us…which just goes to show us all that he is human and down to earth.

If I had one person to fish with and learn from it would be Bill.  I’m sure we would have a great time together.
