For some reason my wife doesn’t want me to go fishing anymore

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Dear Dr. Phil ,

When I retired, I could hardly wait to spend time enjoying my favorite pastime — bass fishing. I got my own little fishing boat and tried to get my wife to join me, but she just never liked fishing.

Finally, one day at the Bait & Tackle Shop, I got to talking to Sam, the shop owner, who it turned out loves bass fishing as much as I do. We quickly became fishing buddies. As I said, the wife doesn’t care about fishing. She not only refuses to join us, but she always complains that I spend too much time fishing.

A few weeks ago, Sam and I had the best fishing trip ever. Not only did I catch the most beautiful bass you’ve ever seen, only a few minutes later Sam must have caught his twin brother!

So I took a picture of Sam holding up the two nice bass that we caught and showed the picture to the wife hoping that maybe she’d get interested. Instead she says she doesn’t want me to go fishing at all anymore! And she wants me to sell the boat! I think she just doesn’t like to see me enjoying myself. What would you do? Tell the wife to forget it and continue my hobby or quit fishing and sell the boat as she insists?
Thanks,

P.S. Enclosed is a picture of Sam with the two bass we caught.

Dear Fisherman,

Get rid of that narrow-minded wife.
That’s a nice pair of bass!

Good Luck to You!

Have you quit using bass catching lures because the Pros don’t!

Saturday, March 28th, 2009

I was at a local tackle shop in New Lexington, Ohio today and looking around and seen a lure I used to use but quit using them.  I remember catching hundreds of nice bass on them but just quit using them and then got thinking why I don’t use them.  Here are the reasons:

First, when I went to Florida and fished in tournaments other anglers said “you’re not going to catch anything with that down here”.  I caught two bass while the guy was telling me that on them.

Second, the other Pros don’t use them!  No one has ever endorsed them that I ever seen, so they probably aren’t all that good even though I have caught hundreds of bass on them.

What dumb reasoning on my part!  The Pros are going to endorse whoever is paying them the most and sponsoring them.   So, guess what? Today, I purchased a whole card of them.  What is the lure?  Kelly’s Striper, purple and white!  I used them for years and all of a sudden just quit when I began fishing in Florida even though I have had great success with them.

Well, they’re back and so am I!

High Water Bass Fishing!!

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Many of the lakes and streams up North have high water right now and they are out of their banks, with the rain we’re suppose to have this week it could be the same around here in Central Ohio before long.

With the water out of the banks you can find baitfish many times  just off shore where the old bank line used to be or just outside of that area.  This of course, brings in the bass to where the baitfish are located.   Fish points with jigs and crankbaits especially during post spawn.

Use your fish depth finder and fish parallel with the old bank line.  Bass move into heavy cover on flooded lakes, try fishing channel points with deeper water that has cover.

Joe and I went to Oakthorpe-he did OK!

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

The temperature was a little over 60 and the skies were blue with a moderate wind.  We fished the North shore by the ramp and caught nothing so we started working our way around the East side of the lake.  I was using a Salt and Pepper Charlies Twitchin Shad and Joe was fishing a Rattle trap. Joe caught one bass on the rattle trap.  Then he said “you know you almost have the right lure but not quite”, like he always says and he put on a white Trick Worm, he caught 3 more bass on the Trick Worm.  I caught one fish on my Twitchin Shad. We were fishing them weightless.

None of the fish were very big.  The water temperature was between 56 and 58 degrees in most places and low.  We talked to several other people and most of them had caught nothing.  One person did say he caught some small crappie.  So, between us, we caught 5 bass….Joe 4 and me 1.  This is about how it starts out every year…he is up 2-0.  When the pads come up then I take over and give him lessons :)   Actually, last year I was ahead our first times out but I’m not worried , we have come out even the last 2 years before this one and if we don’t I can always count wrong.

World Record Bass…Nah, I’ll leave it for someone else!

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

I’m going to Dixon Lake in San Diego to fish for big bass.  am I going after the World record like “Dottie” was? Nope, I have friends who have been after that title for years and hope they catch it.  I just want to catch a bass over 13 pounds, which would be my personal best.  I have caught one that went 12 pounds 14 ounces and would like to catch one bigger than that.

Of course, I only have to fly 3,000 miles to do it,  buy new tackle when I get there because all my rods are one piece and get bigger fishing line among other things.  Then you just hope you can get a nice fish!

I know there have been several 20 pound bass caught there so if I catch a 13 pounder or more I’ll be a happy man!

First Day Of Spring…Big Deal..It’s 26 Degrees

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Spring has officially sprung…big deal!  It’s 26 degrees outside and way to cold for me to go bass fishing in Ohio.

If you plan on going and fish this cold front…try drop-shotting.  The bass aren’t going to chase your lure very far and drop-shotting keeps the lure in front of them longer.  Fish slow!

It is suppose to warm up over the weekend though…high 50′s and no rain!  Nexr week in the 60′s..but rain a couple of days.  We actually need the rain here in central Ohio, lakes and reservoirs are kind of low.

Two at Oakthorpe On Twitchin Shad!

Monday, March 16th, 2009

Well, I caught my first two bass of 2009 today on a Charlies salt & pepper Twitchin Shad.  I fished it just using my rod tip to move it and the reel just to take up the slack line as it came closer to the boat.

I fished it extremely slow and move it only about an inch at a time and would pause it to let it drop and act like a wounded shad.  I seen several live shads that acted like they were dying and in a couple of places seen a wake by the dying shad, so I figured they were either bass or catfish trying to get the shads.

My fish finder wouldn’t work so I couldn’t get a temperature of the water but I would guess it was close to 50.  The bass were in very shallow water.  The biggest bass went about a pound and three-quarters with the second bass smaller than that.

No Bass At Oakthorpe

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

I went bass fishing at Oakthorpe today for about an hour and didn’t even have a strike.  I talked to 4 other fisherman and they didn’t catch anything either out in their boats.

The crappie fisherman I talked to didn’t have any luck either.  I fgure another two weeks and everything will pick up.

The water is pretty low.
