Replica or Mount? It’s A Matter Of Life And Death!

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I replied to a post on a forum, you can read about it here http://fishtalkfishingreports.yuku.com/topic/4968 and added a picture where a man from Florida was showing a 12 pound bass, bad part is the fish was out of the water and died.

Another poster asked. “why wasn’t the fish released since she was a breeder and could have been caught another day?”. I replied, “because we all make mistakes”.

I also caught a 12 pound 14 ounce bass and had it mounted. Ir has haunted me ever since. What I should have done and will from now on, is get a replica made and let the big fish live.

A replica is easy to do for measurements and they have come a long way, again, the paint job is a major part but if a taxidermist can do a good job on your bass then he can do a good job on your replica.

Measure the fish’s length and the girth and a replica can be made. Also, I would advise taking a picture or two of the fish so the taxidermist can see the actual color of the fish.

I know when I had my tackle store in Florida, you could talk until you were blue in the face but almost everyone wanted to mount the original fish instead of getting a replica. It’s time to change that opinion and to save the fish for another day.

You have to remember, not only are you costing that fish it’s life but if it is a female, which most big bass are, then you are losing all the babies it would have had too. That can add up over time for both quality of fish and quantity of fish.

Please get a replica and save the fish for another day!

No Strikes or Fish at Oakthorpe Reservoir in Ohio

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

I went to Oakthorpe on Monday, The wind was coming from the north east, which wasn’t a good sign but also the carp has started spawning. I did see a couple of bass on their beds still. The water temperature was from 66-68 degrees and the water was stained.

I tried my Scum Frog, Spro Frog, Rage Tail Toad, Rage Tail Lizard, and a jig and never had one strike. The carp had everything going around the shore line. The most exciting thing I seen was a big snapping turtle that probably wouldn’t have fit between the inside width of my little boat.

I think the cold front had a lot to do with the bad fishing along with the wind out of the East, not to mention the carp rolling. If none of that really effected the fishing, I’m saying it did anyways. This has been a tough year at Oakthorpe, of course there seems to be a lot more fishing ppressure there now too.

Fishing Been Tough in Southeastern Ohio

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I have read many reports about Ohio Lakes this week and all of them say fishing is tough for bass.

Oakthorpe Reservoir has been slow, Lake Logan has been slow all year and Fox Lake was also slow this week. I think the bass are still spawning in lakes around here and for a little while even the post spawn bass bite will be slow. The only good report I have received lately is from Buckeye Lake.

Things should start changing in the next week or two.

Fishing for bass on the beds…good or bad?

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Some of the largest bass caught for the year are during spawning season for bass. They’re many things to consider whether this is good or bad but one thing you have to remember is this….if you catch the male on the bed and then the female comes in and you catch her, who is left to protect the nest from predators such as bluegills?

While many states have regulations against fishing for bass during the spawn, others like Ohio don’t. Is this good or bad? Should Ohio have a regulation governing bass on their beds?

The truth is, out of tens of thousands of eggs, only a few will ever make it to adult. So, would limiting fishing during the spawn increase the change of getting to adulthood for the fry?

Launching a yacht at Oakthorpe

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Joe called on his way home from work and asked if I wanted to go fishing for awhile. Of course I said “yes”. I met him at Oakthorpe but got there a little earlier than he did. A woman was parked right in the middle of the boat ramp. I said, Maam, we’re going to be bringing a boat in to launch”. She says, “it’s not a yacht is it?” She never moved an inch, not her fishing gear, not her kids and not her van, she just sat there right in the middle of the ramp. Joe and I finished getting the boat ready to launch, I got in the truck and backed it around her, boat leaning to one side because of the uneven terrain. She still sat there. By the way, she was blond.

Joe and I fished and he caught one very small bass on a mini lizard, I caught two crappies on a twitchin shad. The first crappie I caught hit the shad and then immediately wrapped itself around the stem of a lily pad, I thought I had a whale and so did Joe. We couldn’t believe it when I finally got it out and it was a crappie. They were the only three strikes we got.

The water temp was 67 degrees and the water was stained. Fishing has been tough lately at this little lake.

Crappie doing good at New Lexington Reservoir in Ohio

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

The crappie bite is on at New Lexington Reservoir. They are using minnows and redworms by the water treatment plant there. Also, a few small bass are being caught. The water level is back up and not real low like it has been.

Tough Fishing At Oakthorpe Reservoir!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

After going to Oakthorpe Saturday and Sunday and not doing very well, I decided to go again Monday. I was going to catch a bass if I had to stay there all day.

The bite was really tough and I tried a lizard, worm and frog. I really fished it hard and was having a tough time getting a strike. I finally caught one fish but really had to finesse the scum frog, I mean I worked it a little at a time and very small increments. I really didn’t want to come out of there with nothing again.

Here is the outcome:

I want to tell you the fishing was tough and I fished this lake quite often.

Don’t take all the big bass at Oakthorpe Reservoir!

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Apparently, a guide is fishing Oakthorpe Reservoir and taking all the big bass to the taxidermist for his client. On a small of lake as this, only 40 acres, it won’t take long to deplete the population.

Apparently, the guide is new and doesn’t understand the recourse this will bring in the long run. I have a lot of friends who are guides but they never keep all the big fish they catch, not only is it bad for the lake but bad for their business in the long run.

Hopefully, he will change his ways and make duplicates of the fish instead of use the actual fish to mount.

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Well, you can’t make this stuff up people! Bill Walters was fishing a jig in Ohio today and caught this snake. He didn’t snag it, it actually bit his jig!
