New Lexington Reservoir in Ohio-small bass

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Joe, my fishing partner and I went fishing at New Lexington Reservoir off county road 149. We tried worms, frogs, craws, lizards, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and more. We had the best luck on a Rage Tail Toad and a Yum Dinger fished wacky style.

I have went there in the Spring before and seen some nice bass but have never caught any there. I have heard of people catching 7 pounders there but the only thing I have ever caught there is small fish, really small bass.

I think a slot limit would be in order on this reservoir as there are just two many really small bass.

Oakthorpe Reservoir in Ohio-High and Muddy

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

Joe and I decided to go to Oakthorpe Reservoir in Ohio yesterday and the reservoir was out of its banks and muddy. Of course, we figured it would be since all the rain but thought maybe we could do some good in the new cover that was recently flooded. We were wrong!

We did meet the new game warden and he seems to be a nice guy, first time I seen a game warden there since I met Wade (previous game warden) there about 5 years ago or so.

We tried plastic worms, frogs, craws, shads and some other things and Joe came up with one very small fish. I had a few strikes but no hook-ups.

Oakthorpe Reservoir in Ohio-The Little Lake that No one Cares About!

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

If you go to Oakthorpe Reservoir by Pleasantville, Ohio you’ll find out one thing about this little lake, NO ONE CARES! There has been a fallen tree in the drive that goes to the lake and makes it hard to get there. There is trash everywhere, weeds over your head and ruts everywhere. That doesn’t include the ATV’s that make ruts all over the place and makes it so you can’t even fish from shore because of all the ruts.

Then you have the kids that go there to buy and sell their pot and smoke it..hint the name the kids give it “Reefer Lake”! You also have your drinkers who just sit there in their car and drink beer all day.

I had my truck hit by an ATV that a 10 year old was driving, not only at Oakthorpe but on Indian Run Road and Grubb Road. The thing is, according to the Game Warden, ATV”s aren’t even allowed int he place. The only thing that is going to happen is when some little kid on his ATV gets killed then someone will care.

Several years ago they pulled a stolen car out of the lake. People are stealing gas from the cars that are parked there when fishing. The lake isn’t patrolled in any way, not by the Sheriff, care taker, game warden or watercraft. I haven’t seen the game warden there in about 5 years and watercraft people in over 3 years. We need someone to do something about protecting the lake and the people who fish it.

A Great Forum and Great Bunch of Guys!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Have you ever went to a forum and all you have there are people who think they know everything about fishing? If you ask a question, they make you feel like an idiot for asking?

Are you looking for a forum that makes you feel at home, always eager to help answer your questions without being a know-it-all? If so, then I have a place for you called http://fishtalkfishingreports.yuku.com/forums/59

I have met several of the people on this forum and they are just as nice in person as they are on the forum. Rick was one of the nicest guys I ever met anywhere, then there’s Jim from Lake Logan and Bill from New Straitsville, Larry from Lancaster, Ohio and many more. These guys not only love to fish but will help you learn what you want to know and do it in a nice way, not a know-it-all way.

I have fished for bass for over 50 years and have joined a lot of forums in that time but I have to say this is the nicest one I have ever joined. They have lake reports from every state and people country wide to answer your questions and to try to help you become a better angler.

Fishing the Frog in Lily Pads-Fish Opposite the Sun!

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Over the years I have fished thousands of hours using a frog in lily pads. I believe the best way to fish a body of water is when the sun is rising in the East to fish the West side of the lake and when it is setting in the West to fish the East side of the lake.

You may be asking why I believe this…here is the answer. A bass doesn’t actually see the lure 99% of the time is very thick lily pads, all they see is a silhouette of the frog on top of the pads. When you fish the opposite of the sun like stated above, the silhouette of the frog is longer and easier for the bass to see.

Now, on the opposite end of this spectrum, you will probably get more misses as the lure seems longer to the bass than it actually is and their strike may be off a little because of that reason. The good news is, you will get more strikes overall, I believe.

Caution…….when you fish opposite the sun, make sure you and your boat doesn’t cast a shadow on the pads themselves and scare the fish away. Stay far enough back of where you want to fish.

If you get a strike on your frog and a miss (blowup) by all means follow up with a plastic worm and throw it where the blow-up was located and where the hole in the pads are from the blow-up and the miss.

Ever wonder how far a bass can see you lure?

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

A bass can see your lure about 4 times are far as you can. Take your lure and watch it and see how far it goes down before you lose sight of it. If you lose sight at 2 feet below the surface then a bass could see your lure for 8 feet away.

Of course, in clear water it is going to be further and in stained water not quite as far.

Clear Fork Reservoir in Ohio

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

Joe and I went to Clear Fork Reservoir today and arrived there about 7 am. It was a bright sunny day and when we first got there, there was hardly a breeze. The water temperature was 72 and after a couple of hours the wind started to pick up. The water isn’t crystal gin clear but it is pretty nice and looks clean. It is a lake known for Musky.

I caught the first bass on a 4′ watermelon and white Yum Dinger, fishing it weedless wacky rigged (thanks Bill) within 10 minutes of fishing. Joe hooked one right by the boat but didn’t get it in. Then he caught several by the islands and then we fished the South shore of the lake and we caught some more bass there.

There was a bass tournament there and from what I understand the big bass weight 3 pounds and some odd ounces, a little less than 4 lbs. We caught some that were that big. All of the bass we caught were from 2 pounds to 3 pounds something, none real big but none real small either. They had a pretty good belly on them and fought pretty good for their size.

The is an 8 mph speed limit on the lake and of course bu shore a no wake zone. We had a very good time and can recommend the lake for a fun trip!

A Very Special Young Man, Timothy Larson!

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

I watched a Jimmy Houston TV show this morning about a very special young man named Timothy Larson. You see, Timothy had a terminal illness and knew what the end results was going to be but he was a brave young man and didn’t let it keep him down.

Tim was just 4 years old. He could have had any adventure he wanted as his last wish, Disneyland, or whatever, but what he wanted most was to go fishing with Jimmy Houston, and Jimmy made that wish come true. Matter of fact, Jimmy and Tim became very good friends.

This little boy was a brave young man and an inspiration for us all. He had a smile that lit up the whole world. He was a great little fisherman too. The very last TV show he wanted to watch was Jimmy Houston and the last thing he wanted to do was go fishing. If you could watch this show and not have a tear in your eye then you did better than me. What a fine example for us all! Timothy passed away in 2008.

There are many young men and young ladies who have a terminal illness like Tim did and many who have have a wish like Timothy did of going fishing. Some have no means of going, whether it be no family members to take them fishing, no way of getting to a lake or whatever.

Maybe, it’s time we take a minute from our busy world and see if we can make another young person’s dream come true. There are many young people in The Special Wish Foundation, St. Judes and local hospitals in your area in the same situation as Timothy was. They also would love to go fishing. Not only could you make their dream come true but you could make a very special friend. Take a few minutes out of your life and give that time to someone special. You can post messages on bulletin boards, let hospital staff know your intent and even put an ad in the local paper. It’s something you and your new friend will remember forever.
