First Time at Lake Erie

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Joe and I fished the backwaters of Erie, Sandusky Bay, I believe it was. The very first thing I noticed was all the snakes. Joe isn’t a snake lover so he was kind of spooked. We probably seen 200 of them swimming and a couple tried to get in our boat…….it gave Joe the creeps. So, me being the nice guy I am and since Joe was in shorts, I waited until he settled down a bit then ran the tip of my rod up his calf. I thought he was going to jump out of the boat.

We caught several bass, two on topwater. I lost a nice fish of some kind flippin boat docks, it broke my line. The biggest bass we caught was about 3 pounds. We had a great time!

This was my first trip to Erie, Joe had been there before and caught a 4 pound smallmouth.

Buckeye Lake In Ohio, Cats and Stripers!

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

My son-in-law, Joe, My grandsons, Eman and Justin and I all went fishing last night at Buckeye Lake. There was a light breeze and quite a few boats.

We decided to fish with chicken liver and nightcrawlers. This is the first time I had fish for anything except bass all year. We got at the lake around 6:30 and started off fishing the South shore of Leib’s Island.

I got the first bite but Joe got the first fish, a little mud cat as I call them. My grandson Eman (Emmanuel), caught a striper that was about 3 1/2 pounds. Then he caught a nice catfish that went about 6 pounds. After that he was hard to be around for awhile as we had to hear what a great fisherman he was. LOL

When it got darker and because none of us great fisherman remembered to bring a light or lantern we moved to the North shore of the island where there was light. We fished for about an hour there and Joe finally got a bite.

The fish knocked over his can of pop that he calls his alarm and the fight was on. He first got tangled in my line, then he ran Eman and I from the shore and chased this fish down the bank for about 30 yards. I just knew it was going to be a monster. He finally got it in and it was a nice catfish of about 7 or 8 pounds but certainly not one to chase everybody off the bank….great drama Joe! LOL

We fished for another hour and talked and had a great time then decided to leave about midnight. It was a good time for all and all the fish were caught on chicken liver.

Bass Fishing-Slower than Most!

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

I fish with several of my friends on a regular basis and one thing that I notice most of all is that when I fish for bass alone, I fish a lot slower. I fish the spots a lot more thoroughly than anyone I fish with, my friends cover more water and fish faster.

For me, fishing slower pays off and I catch fish, as when I fish in my friend’s boat I catch a lot less fish and feel like I’m rushed. Their method works for them just fine but it’s hard for me to fish fast like they do.

I fish lily pads a lot and will just lodge my boat in the pads and fan cast and fish. I’ll fish like that until I complete a 75% radius of a circle, I don’t fish right in back of me but all around in front and the sides. If I fish with my friend’s I don’t have time to do that as we’re moving way to fast.

Again, I’m not saying my way is the right and only way to fish for bass but it is what works for me and I do better at catch bass that way.
